Artist Statement:

My paintings are unreasonable, in that through them I try and reconcile seemingly irreconcilable opposites. But this is the thing about painting; it's really good at illustrating the tension that opposites can generate. And this tension can be typified as one of the principal generators in any creative endeavour (an idea which can be extended into life). So yeah, my paintings are about art itself, but also more broadly about the ubiquitous and essential presence throughout life of generative opposites. Some examples of how we see this in painting is through the relationship of say the surface and the space, motion and stillness, the seen (what is represented) and the invisible (what is unrepresented, but impacts what is seen), or even truth and illusion/deception. Of course these are often hard to differentiate but I try and help that process along by pushing each to a logical extreme. For me its a rich and vital source of inspiration. August 2025.
