Artwork Title: The Magpie Chapel
Artwork Medium: Porcelain, stains, glaze, mother of pearl lustre
Year Created: 2025
Artwork Description:
I have been inspired by stained glass windows and cathedral architecture to create a stained porcelain vessel reminiscent of an object of reverence. I used slab building techniques and sprig moulded forms to create highly textured surfaces in vibrant colours to evoke a sense of the joyful devotion I feel for Australian bird life, particularly the Magpie. My artwork blends European fleur-de-lis, laurel swags and Gothic arch motifs with gum flowers, the colours of wattle and a clear blue Australian sky as a backdrop for a family of Magpies. A layer of lustre enhances the surface of the object to that of a sacred or valuable object.
Artist Statement:
Hi there, I'm Amanda, a Western Sydney based artist who loves working with ceramics. My pieces are all about bright colours and texture, as I believe art should not only be visually pleasing but also tactile. I love using porcelain to build my pieces and have my own kiln, which allows me to fully explore and experiment with my craft in my home studio. As an emerging artist, I am constantly learning and investing in my practice by doing short courses or artist-led workshops with an aim to create unique pieces. My love for ceramics began as a hobby and has now turned into my passion, and I hope to share my love for it with others through my work.

Artist Bio:
Part time Visual Arts teacher, part time beginning ceramic artist creating with stained porcelain to create vibrant, textured and patterned hand-built pieces that reflect my love of stained glass windows, historic architecture and Australian birds. I hand build clay into vessels and decorative wall works using spring moulded animal, plant and architectural motifs. I love experimenting and am always curious to learn new techniques and methods.
