Gamblin PVA Size is a medium that is applied to unprimed fabric prior to adding Gamblin Ground. It protects and seals the porous fabric from any oil penetration found in the Gamblin Ground. Sizing your canvas is important to avoid any rotting of your linen or cotton canvas which can happen without a size layer.
Gamblin PVA Size is a contemporary size that conservation scientists recommend instead of Rabbit Skin glue. The PVA size will provide a seal for the fabric and won’t re-absorb atmospheric moisture, nor will it swell and shrink as rabbit skin glue can. Gamblin PVA Size has a neutral pH, won’t yellow, and will retain flexibility after drying.
Gamblin PVA Size has a milky white colour with a watery consistency that is easy to apply. To use, shake bottle to mix the PVA and distilled water as some settling may occur while on the shelf. Then simply apply directly from the bottle in a thin coat using a brush, it is recommended to apply 1-2 thin coats of PVA Size prior to stretching your canvas.
Clean up is simple, using just water to clean the medium off brushes and skin.
