Looking for a simple craft that’s both practical and beautiful? Try making your own decorative bowl using STAEDTLER FIMOair, the air-dry modelling clay that allows you to do just that, without needing a kiln or oven! These bowls are perfect for holding jewellery, keys, spare change or little treasures, and the best bit? They don’t have to be perfect - it’s the unique shapes and textures that make each piece special.

Why You'll Love This Project
• No need to bake: FIMOair hardens naturally at room temperature
• Wabi-sabi vibes: Imperfect shapes bring charm, personality and a handmade aesthetic
• Custom finishes: Paint, texture and colour your bowl however you like once it’s dry
What you will need
Clay & Tools
- STAEDTLER FIMOair Modelling Clay
- Acrylic roller or brayer
- Baking paper or craft mat
- Small bowls (to shape your clay)
- Texture tools (optional — fabric, stamps, etc.)
Finishing (Optional)
- Acrylic paints or varnish
- Paint brushes
- Sandpaper (fine grit)
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Prepare Your Workspace
Lay down baking paper or a craft mat to keep your surface clean and clay easy to lift. - Roll Out the Clay
Divide your FIMOair clay into manageable pieces and roll out each piece with your roller until it’s about 2–3 mm thick - thinner makes a lighter dish, thicker makes it more sturdy. Add texture by rolling over fabric or stamps if you like. - Shape the Bowl
Gently lift your flattened clay and drape it over or inside a small bowl or template. Let the clay settle naturally. Don’t worry about perfect edges! Let the edges bend and fold for a handmade look that’s uniquely you. - Let It Air-Dry
Leave your bowl on the template at room temperature for around 24 hours or until it’s completely firm. If your bowl is thicker in places, drying may take a little longer. - Finishing Touches
Once dry, you can paint your bowl with acrylic paints and seal with varnish for extra protection and shine. A touch of gloss or matte varnish gives a beautiful finish and helps protect against spills or wear.
Tips for Creative Variations
• Make a set: Create bowls in different sizes and colours to use together.
• Add pattern: Impress designs using tools or objects before drying.
• Personalise it: Paint fun motifs or initials to make a thoughtful gift.
