Oil Landscapes of Australian Sunsets: a Beginner Workshop

About this event

Immerse yourself in a luminous Australian sunset inspired by the aesthetic of the Heidelberg School, sometimes called Australian Impressionism. Painting from the intense, golden light and distinctive landscapes of Australia as captured by artists such as Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts and their colleagues, we will explore how to render that light in oil using modern water-mixable oils and compatible mediums for an accessible, clean studio experience. There will be two paths to follow:

  • Beginner Option: Follow step-by-step the instructor’s demonstration, choosing to replicate the demo composition as you go.
  • Intermediate/Experienced Option: Work independently from a reference image that will be provided, applying the techniques but choosing your own composition.

Attendees will get:

  • How to mix and apply Winsor & Newton’s water-mixable oil colours to achieve the soft-glow, shimmering atmosphere characteristic of the Heidelberg School.
  • Use of water mixable oil mediums to enhance flow, glazing and subtle light effects.
  • Techniques for capturing a sunset scene: underpainting, blocking in broad colour planes, building midtones and light accents, finishing with expressive brushwork.
  • Understanding the special light of the Australian landscape: the high-sun glow, deep shadows, golden grasses, and eucalyptus silhouettes.
  • Creative compositional choices: leveraging low horizon lines, expansive skies, and loose brushwork to evoke the feeling of openness and immediacy shown in the plein air works of the Heidelberg artists.
  • Finishing safely and cleanly: how to clean brushes, store water-mixable oils, and finish your piece in a ready-to-display format.
