Derivan White Gesso Primer is a great surface preparation option when working with canvas, board or even paper. It's the perfect addition to your art supply toolkit, as it will allow you to turn almost any surface into a canvas for your artworks! This gesso will help prepare a surface for both acrylic and oil paintings.
This Derivan Gesso possesses an intense white ground with an excellent tooth for easy paint manipulation. It's a great medium for priming raw canvas, or equally good on primed canvases or surfaces that you want to sand down and change the tooth on.
Derivan recommends applying their White Gesso Primer with a spatula or blade on canvases. When applying with a brush, mix equal parts water to Derivan Gesso, especially when you are applying the first coats on raw canvas or linen. Note that your application method will impact the tooth of the primer - for example, applying with a coarse brush will give a rough textured tooth, while a smooth finish can be achieved by applying the gesso with a soft bristled flat brush, then sanding down the dried surface lightly with fine sandpaper.
If you require more than one coat of gesso, it’s recommended to lightly sand between coats, allowing for a smooth finish.
Tip: If working on canvas, make sure you stretch the canvas before applying Derivan White Gesso primer as it will tighten the canvas as it dries, making a firmer ground to paint on.
