GAC 400 is a 100% acrylic polymer medium that artists can use to stiffen natural fibres and fabrics. Fibres saturated with GAC 400 will dry to a hard, stiff film. It’s perfect for stiffening unprimed canvas or for sculpting and shaping fabrics, allowing artists to transform lightweight fabrics into free-standing forms for sculpted or textured artworks.
To use GAC 400, apply the undiluted medium with a brush to soak into the fabric, then shape your fabric to the desired form before the medium dries. Once dry, the fabric will stay stiffened in its new shape. After your medium dries in the fabric, take care not to stretch, bend, or roll the material as micro-cracks will form in the dried medium that will decrease its stiffness.
Depending on the application, artists may want to heat-set GAC 400 to increase its water resistance and increase the stiffening properties to some degree. To heat set, use a hair dryer on high for 5-10 minutes. Note that heat-setting can release trace amounts of chemicals, so it’s recommended to do so in a well-ventilated area.
GAC 400 can be mixed with acrylic paints if desired to tint it.
