Acrylic paints are a favourite paint with many artists because of their fast drying properties in comparison with oil paints. If you’re an artist who likes to work quickly, then acrylics are the medium of choice for you and their ability to be mixed with water or acrylic gels to resemble anything from a watercolour to an oil painting when dry is another of their popular features.
There are two main types of acrylic paints and Eckersley’s carries an excellent range of both. These two types are;
- Artist acrylics – these are professional grade acrylic paints which contain the greatest amount of pigment and are designed to resist chemical reactions resulting from exposure to water, UV rays or oxygen.
- Student acrylics – these are similar to artist acrylic paints, but have lower pigment concentrations, fewer colours and lower colour strength. They are also cheaper to buy.
It really depends on what sort of project you are doing with which sort of acrylic paint you should buy. If you are looking for some for a kids art project then the student acrylics will be perfect. Otherwise, the intensity of the artist acrylic paints really makes them worth the investment.
There are also differences in viscosity between different acrylic paints, which will influence the way they look on the canvas. Heavy body acrylic paints have a much thicker consistency, lending themselves better to colour blending and more visible brushstrokes. Whereas fluid acrylic paints are thinner, which makes them better options for finer detailed work and techniques like dry brushing or creating acrylic pour artworks.
