Toyobo Solar Etching Plates are simple to use, pre-sensitised, photo-sensitive printing plates. Solar etching plates are an ideal alternative to working with traditional etching plate techniques that require grounds, acids and solvents which are sometimes hazardous.
Solar Etching Plates allow images to be transferred from clear film (such as acetate) to the plate by using a source of UV light or bright sunlight. Once exposed, solar plates are developed in water without the need of additional harmful chemicals. The resulting plates reproduce fine detail picking up the smallest of marks on paper and have their own attractive plate tone.
As there are no acids used to produce your etched design on the Toyobo Solar Etching Plates, it is safe to use in the classroom, at home or in the studio. It is also an environmentally friendly etching option as it avoids harsh chemicals and solvents!
To use Toyobo Solar Etching Plates, place your film with image on top of the Solar Etching Plate (use black opaque artwork for best results). Then, expose to sunlight/UV light for around 2 minutes. Place the plate in water at 19-24°C to develop, which will take roughly 3-5 minutes. Once developed, place back in the sun to dry and for the coating to harden. The plate is now ready to be used with printing inks.
Toyobo Solar Etching Plates are 0.95mm thick on a steel plate and come in a pack of 10. Store them in a dark, dry space when not using to avoid accidental exposure.
