Art Spectrum Whiting is a white chalk (Calcium Carbonate) in powder form which has a variety of uses in both painting and etching. Whiting can be used as a filler for water-based paints and also to extend oil colours.
Art Spectrum Whiting will provide tooth when used in the making of traditional grounds for oil painting or the production of Artists’ soft pastels – note that it is finer in texture than Art Spectrum Calcite. When using Whiting to make your own gesso, the following ratios are generally recommended: 25% whiting, 25% rabbit skin glue and 50% water.
Art Spectrum Whiting can also be used with ammonia or water for degreasing and preparing zinc intaglio plates prior to etching. It can also be used to stiffen etching inks if desired.
