Gamblin Ground makes a strong, bright, non-absorbent foundation for oil paintings. Oil colour will retain colour saturation compared to an acrylic gesso. Also suitable for "reductive"underpainting techniques.

Gamblin Ground can be applied to sized stretched linen or canvas or raw untreated panels. It creates a strong bright, non-absorbent foundation for oil paintings. Gamblin Ground is made from alkyd resin, titanium dioxide and calcium carbonate. A surface with Gamblin Ground means that oil paint layers on top will retain better colour saturation. The lower absorbency also allows for 'reductive' underpainting techniques where the paint can be wiped back to the ground.

Gamblin Ground is thicker than acrylic gesso and requires different application techniques. For untreated panels, thin the Gamblin Ground with a few drops of Gamsol Odourless Mineral Spirit on a separate palette (the consistency should be of heavy cream once mixed). Apply the thinned ground loosely onto the surface of the panel with a trowel or painting knife. Once a very thin layer has covered the surface, use a paint roller to achieve an even coat. The first layer of Gamblin Ground needs to be very thin and may appear patchy. Once dry to the touch (around 2-4 days), apply a second layer in the same manner and leave to dry (3-7 days depending on weather conditions and humidity levels) before applying paint.

For stretched linen canvas apply Gamblin PVA size directly from the bottle onto the canvas, prior to applying Gamblin Ground. This protects the canvas from any oil penetration found in the Gamblin Ground. Apply Gamblin Ground directly from the tin, working it into the weave of the fabric in a multidirectional manner with a plastic trowel. Avoid thick build-up of ground onto the stretched canvas surface. Gamblin Ground can be thinned with a small amount of Gamsol if required for easier application. Once the Gamblin Ground has been applied over the entire area, use a bristle brush with a little Gamsol to work out any brush marks or unevenness. Once dry to the touch (around 24 hours), apply a second layer in the same manner and leave to dry (3-7 days depending on weather conditions and humidity levels) before applying paint.
