You may also want to have some scissors on hand to cut out the ice cream templates (adult supervision required for little artists), paper towel to wipe off your brushes, a jar of water to clean your tools, and a plastic tablecloth to protect your table!
How to paint your Colourful Ice Cream:
Paint your wooden board in the background colour of your choice. For the example artwork, we have done a bright yellow in the middle, mixing white into the yellow to create a more pastel yellow at the top, and adding red to yellow to make an orange colour at the bottom – use your brush to blend these colours together on your wooden board and create a nice gradient. Allow the panel to dry.
Cut out your ice cream template and trace it onto your background. Make sure the paint is dry before you to this!
To make a brown colour for the ice cream cone, mix red, yellow, and light blue together – adding a little bi at a time until you have the right colour! You can also add white to lighten the colour. Once you’re happy with your brown colour, paint in the ice-cream cone section of your background.
While the paint is still wet, use the bottom end of your brush to scratch lines in your brown paint, creating a waffle pattern. This technique is called sgraffito!
Now you can paint in your ice cream scoops! Experiment with painting in circles to get an ice-cream looking effect. Make sure you’re waiting for each ‘scoop’ to dry before moving on to the next one – this will prevent any blending of colours between your scoops!
Add your cherry & umbrella to top off your delicious tropical ice cream painting.
Wait to dry, then hang your colourful new creation somewhere you can admire it!
This painting kit leaves lots of room for you to experiment with different techniques and colours with your paint, as well as practicing your colour mixing! If you’re feeling adventurous you can even add a bit of water to our acrylics to add some pour puddles to your work (this is how we got the dripping effect of the strawberry ice cream in our example!)
